As Antibiotic Research UK (ANTRUK) has grown, so has its remit. When first formed, the charity’s main focus was on developing new treatments for drug-resistant infections. This broadened out to include AMR education and most recently to supporting patients with an antibiotic resistant infection. To reflect this evolution of the charity’s focus, the Education Committee’s scope has been broadened to include public engagement and patient support.
The committee’s name has been updated to the Public Engagement and Patient Support Committee to better reflect the composition of the committee and its objectives. These include:
- Supporting patients and their families affected by drug-resistant infections
- Working in partnership with key stakeholders to raise awareness and reduce the spread of drug-resistant infections
A word from our team
Commenting on the name change, our CEO Professor Colin Garner said: “Antibiotic Research UK has grown significantly since its formation. Our remit has expanded to take a more holistic view of drug-resistant infections. We are keen to see patients who are affected by these debilitating and sometimes life-threatening infections become major stakeholders in our charity. We are the first publicly funded charity in the world to focus on what many consider could be the next pandemic”.
Professor Christine Bond, Emeritus Professor, University of Aberdeen and Chair of the renamed Committee, said: “Providing trustworthy information and support to patients affected by an antibiotic resistant infection is an integral part of the educational activities of the Charity. Our unique Patient Support Service addresses a previously unmet need. It has been recognised by national awards and individual testimonials alike. The new committee’s name rightly emphasises this aspect of our work which is conducted in parallel with initiatives to inform the wider public about antibiotic resistance”.
