Our Charity received a lot of media coverage during the week of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. A Joint Declaration by 83 pharmaceutical companies and eight industry associations was released to co-incide with the meeting. The Declaration stated that in return for government payment to make antibiotic development more financially attractive, in return, the companies have promised to invest in research and improve access to antibiotics around the world. Signatories included GSK, Merck, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson.
At the same time scientists at the National Physical Laboratory published a paper on a new method to kill bacteria using nanoparticles of lactoferrin, a protein found in saliva and breast milk. The nanoparticles could have their core filled and the authors cited how they had used a core siRNA to silence actively transcribed genes in a HeLa cell line. The same particles were toxic to bacteria and suggested a new antibiotic approach. The article was featured on the front page of The Times on Saturday 23 January 2016, in an article by Oliver Moody, The Times Science Correspondent. Professor Colin Garner, the Charity’s Chief Executive provided quotes to support the article and these were included in the final printed article.Castelletto-et-al-Chem-Sci-plastic-peptide-capsules-Dec-2015
