Our world-first Patient Support programme has been rewarded with a place on the shortlist in the prestigious Antibiotic Guardian 2020 Shared Learning & Awards.
Users can access the Patient Support service by phone or email. The programme is helping, informing, and supporting people to cope with serious drug-resistant bacterial infections.
Our sterling service has secured a berth in the Public Engagement category. But, we face a stern challenge from NHS Leeds CCG Roll Back Antimicrobial resistance Initiative (RBA Initiative), the University of Liverpool, the University of Reading, Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS) and Great Ormond Street Hospital, London.
This extraordinary year means that the usual glittering awards presentation event has had to be cancelled. Instead, an equally esteemed virtual ceremony will take place in late November.
Professor Colin Garner, chief executive of Antibiotic Research UK said:
“Being shortlisted for the Antibiotic Guardian awards is yet another endorsement for our work. Our patient support service, the first in the UK to support patients affected by an antibiotic resistant infection. The service began to provide patients with individual help plus a small network of support. But, from the proverbial acorn a mighty oak has grown. Now we have an increased team, National Lottery Funding in England and Scotland, a Facebook Support Group and online information and question and answer forum. Our Patient Support service is also attracting lots of attention, including at these awards. Most importantly though, it is offering a life-preserving service on drug-resistant infections that simply didn’t exist before.”
