A fantastic opportunity to join a new, rapidly expanding charity dealing with a problem of global significance has arisen. Antibiotic Research UK (ANTRUK), the world’s first charity tackling bacterial antibiotic resistance is seeking a new Chair of the Trustees to succeed the current chair who will be retiring in Autumn 2019. Antibiotic resistance, where infectious bacteria become resistant to antibiotics is a grave threat to human kind. Estimates suggest that globally up to 10 million people per year will die from a resistant infection if things do not change between now and then.
ANTRUK was formed in 2014 to respond to this global challenge of resistance, and because there was no charity and advocacy agency focussing on this major health issue. Our mission is to conduct research into new antibiotic treatments, educate the public and professionals about the problem of resistance and support patients through networking and education. Our work tackles the general ignorance about resistance and aims to not only tackle the problem through our own efforts but also to work with all stakeholders collaboratively. We focus on the need to address social as well as medical issues in treating patients and limiting the onward transmission of the infection. We manage grant-funded programmes, commissioned research and, increasingly, work as an advisory agency. We act as advocates to ensure our policies and services meet the needs of patients and communities effectively. We also encourage government, donors and drug companies to increase their commitment to research to developing new way to control resistance, in support of the World Health Organization’s antimicrobial resistance strategy.
