Our Sir Alexander Fleming 90th anniversary cake at the University of Manchester

So its nearly all over for 2018, our annual Great British Tea Party held during World Antibiotic Awareness Week (12 – 18 October 2018). Tea Party’s were held up and down the country to raise money for our charity and equally importantly to increase awareness about antibiotic resistance.

Patron – Dr John Sentamu, Archbishop of York

Our Patron, the Archbishop of York, couldn’t unfortunately attend any of the events but he prepared the following statement which was read out at our Annual Lecture and the Burythorpe Great British Tea Part y ‘I am sorry that I can’t be with you today. As your charity’s Patron, I am passionate to see the problem of antibiotic resistance tackled effectively. I am pleased to hear that the charity is making good progress in its mission of research, education and patient support. We will all have taken antibiotics at some time in our lives and sometimes these might have been lifesaving. There is a danger that all the benefits of effective antibiotics could be lost through the rise in resistance and that our children and grandchildren fail to receive the benefits of antibiotics that our generation has enjoyed. I wish all success to the Annual Lecture / Great British Tea Party and hope this event will help raise the profile and funds for this very worthy cause. It is entirely appropriate on the 90th anniversary of the discovery of penicillin by Sir Alexander Fleming that our attention is focussed on the antibiotic resistance problem’.

In September, the 90th anniversary of the discovery of penicillin was celebrated. In commemoration of this major medical breakthrough, a celebratory Sir Alexander Fleming cake was baked in Manchester which travelled around the country.
