Antibiotic Research UK launches research fund with Sylvia Waddilove Foundation

Nicola Osmond-Evans Press Release

Call-Out for research project proposals to tackle antibiotic resistance.

Antibiotic Research UK, the world’s first charity tackling bacterial antibiotic resistance, has today launched a new research grant award scheme, ‘The Sylvia Waddilove Early Stage Research Award’. In partnership with the Sylvia Waddilove Foundation the grants will support early career research in the field of antibiotic resistance.

The charity will be awarding three grants of up to £9,000 each, with awarded research funds to be spent over one year. Grant applications are welcome from all areas of research into antibiotic resistance, although the charity currently has an interest in prioritising research into complex/chronic urinary tract infections and related diagnostics. Research awards can only be applied to laboratory based costs/consumables, and not to staffing or travel costs.

Researchers who can provide matched funding are encouraged to apply.

Jonathan Pearce, Chief Executive Officer of Antibiotic Research UK, commented: “We are grateful for the support of the Sylvia Waddilove Foundation with these research grant awards, which will fund essential research to tackle the urgent global threat of antibiotic resistance.”

All applications will be reviewed by independent external assessors as well as by members of the Charity’s Science or Education Committees as appropriate. Antibiotic Research UK has adopted the scoring system developed by the Medical Research Council for use by independent referees. The top scoring applications will be shortlisted and then prioritised by the Charity’s Grants Panel.

To apply please complete the application form found here and send the completed form, as well as any accompanying documents to grants@antibioticresearch.org.uk. Only applicants working in higher education, not-for-profit institutes and non-governmental organisations based in the United Kingdom are eligible to apply.

Closing date for applications: Wednesday 31 May 2023 at 5.00pm.
