The charity represented by Chief Executive, Professor Colin Garner and Vicki Joughin, a York based fundraising volunteer were delighted to attend the announcement by York Rotary Club that Antibiotic Research UK would be one of only two charities being supported by the 2022 Dragon Boat Race Challenge. This annual fundraising event since it started has raised an astonishing £1.2 million for  charities.

The 2022 Dragon Boat Race Challenge will take place on Sunday 10 July 2022. Teams will compete along a 200 metre course on the River Ouse. In 2021 31 teams competed to benefit two local York charities – the event raised over £70,000.

Antibiotic Research UK was selected by York Rotary as a nominated charity for a number of reasons. Firstly, because it had strong York and North Yorkshire links. Rotary members also felt they wanted to know more about antibiotic resistance and knew we’d deliver reliable information. Plus, the COVID pandemic had heightened awareness of infectious disease and its devastating impact.

Professor Garner told the audience how delighted he was that the charity had been nominated. He hoped in the months leading up to the event to reach out to York Rotary members to tell them about the work the charity was undertaking and why it was so important. He highlighted the fact each week at York Hospital patients were being admitted with difficult to treat bacterial infections often needing intravenous antibiotics.
